On the GCR we have on occasion put a TPO vehicle in a passenger rake which allows people to walk through and see an unusual vehicle; I don't see why you couldn't do this with a sleeper. Sadly it's probably a luxury most railways can't afford so...

Tonight and tomorrow the SVR are running all night so to answer that question yes they still do it.

I visited the Railway on Tuesday and not expecting to see LYN there at all and was rewarded with seeing her in steam and on test. [MEDIA] [MEDIA] Graham

All this talk of going to bed and waking up in the same place is hardly the point. The SVR has in the past run galas which run all night (never been to one myself; not sure if this still happens?), OK such events are very much a 'one off' but...

Interesting that in that clip 1719 still seems to have all of its original seating. By the time it was restored for use on the GCR I think only about 4 original seats were with it, so it had some non-authentic ones for a while although if memory...

  6. pmh_74 liked toplight's post in the thread Future covered workshop and storage space (especially for carriages) ?.

The reality is that all vehicles that are stored outside are steadily deteriorating, getting rustier and rustier. Even say Mark1s that look restored, if you looked under the skin I bet many are rusty as hell. Often when they are 'restored' holes...

I know nothing of the Lochty railway, but I do know that the owner of 'Beavertail' 1719 has said that he would like to reunite it with 60009 at some point. I wonder if there's any way that can be made to happen before 60009 retires?

  8. pmh_74 replied to the thread Steam on Manchester Metrolink.

Many years ago (circa 1997-99) I went on a steam special in Germany, the title of which translated as "Cologne round trip". We boarded at Köln Hbf and set off, I'm unsure exactly where we went but I do recall us (a) going down what appeared to be...

  9. pmh_74 liked std tank's post in the thread Steam on Manchester Metrolink.

MSC No 32 Gothenberg, as its alter ego Thomas, appeared at an open day at Queens Road Metrolink depot in the early days of Metrolink. It travelled from Bury to Queens Road in the early hours. I believe it paid a quick visit to Manchester Victoria...

  10. pmh_74 replied to the thread Tender Austerity at Ribble Steam Railway.

I'm not certain, and I certainly couldn't tell you what the difference is, but I thought it was a spare RSH 'Ugly' cylinder block. (What happens if one of the preserved 'Uglies' ever needs a new cylinder block is another question of course -...

  11. pmh_74 replied to the thread Rolling Stock For Sale.

One has to question why a freight engine (next to no chance of main line running, ever) even needs a support coach, let alone one which also has next to no hope of main line running, ever. At this stage of the "project" (if we can call it that)...

  12. pmh_74 replied to the thread Future covered workshop and storage space (especially for carriages) ?.

I agree with this in theory, but considering a railway like the GCR which scrapped a number of vehicles as "too difficult to restore" back in the 80s/90s, but has since accumulated some far worse specimens and is storing them for a rainy day (and...

  13. pmh_74 liked paulhitch's post in the thread Tender Austerity at Ribble Steam Railway.

Forgive me Martin but what is it about railway enthusiasts that they want to turn the reasonably authentic into the utterly contrived? An Austerity is perfectly capable of running ten miles on a tankful of water and if a given example is...

  14. pmh_74 liked Robin's post in the thread Use of rail lubrication?.

As you leave Kidderminster Town (135m 40ch), the mileage decreases until you reach Kidderminster Junction (135m 21ch) then starts to increase again towards Bewdley. That means the first right hand bend before the Diesel Depot is a left hand bend,...
