  1. MarkinDurham liked 26D_M's post in the thread LE Movements, ECS and Test Runs 2017.

I think it was meant more in-house than private and the point made about it potentially being the MNs debut is valid. Better not to hire to other customers until proven so in that respect the Lune is ideal, especially as it features not the most...

That's an interesting point about the Raven A2 boiler and the proposed effective shortening of the boiler by moving the front tubeplate back. The boiler was simply too long, and the last part didn't add to steam generation because the flue gases...

  4. MarkinDurham liked Steve's post in the thread Crowdfunding appeal for 6201.

The loco wasn't steam tight on its trial runs, admittedly. However, if you think those leaks were big, your concept of big is in serious doubt. And what do you base the lacklustre performance claim on? Just because it din't go roaring by at 90...

You can think what you like - but those who own the loco don't give a toss what you think.

  6. MarkinDurham liked Jamessquared's post in the thread Crowdfunding appeal for 6201.

Without wishing to comment on the competence of WCRC one way or the other, there does seem to be a common theme widely expressed on NatPres (and it has been very prevalent in this thread, with reference to several different locomotives) that...

  7. MarkinDurham liked Where's Mazeppa?'s post in the thread The Border Raider with 60163 - 16/09/17.

Just to reprise my original post #9 on this thread, this was actually achieved by the "Caledonian Tornado" Crewe-Glasgow and return in September 2011. Had the trip been confined to the WCML, by my reckoning it would have clocked up 486 miles, but...

98818 on the Lune Rivers trip for her 'maiden voyage' was always the most likely rostering, and it makes sense. It's effectively a private train. Good luck to them.

I would suggest that the Raven A2 was probably better than TGB, although not as good as the Gresley A1s. As for driving on the "wrong" axle, plenty of other NER locomotives had this arrangement, and many survived until quite late on, the B16...

  10. MarkinDurham liked BrightonBaltic's post in the thread Proposed New-Builds.

The thing is that, if you're going to build a Thompson Pacific, it's going to need quite a bit fixing... and the logical conclusions of those improvements would land you exactly where Peppercorn ended up, so as we've got an A2 and a new-build A1,...

Well yes, quite so, Simon, but I was merely making the point that that image does look good :) Quite what the practicalities of building it as opposed to the locomotives he did actually build would have been is, of course, another matter...

I have to say that that "995" is actually a purposeful-looking machine, and very Raven-esque with the drive on to the leading coupled wheels. Thompson's father-in-law would have been pleased, I think?

  13. MarkinDurham liked Ploughman's post in the thread Some NYMR Memories.

My Snowplough 18 being delivered to Grosmont by the Whitby pick up goods 31. In about 1975 One of the Lambtons venturing onto the mainline to collect it. Just make out the plough slope facing Whitby. I think this was the 2nd attempt as the...

Why, exactly? There are plenty of other MNs about, and as she stands, she still has a "wow" factor that a smaller machine possibly wouldn't give. But we digress - again...
