And there's also a feature on the Swanage Railway website about it. Confirms West Coast diesel locos will be used. Fantastic that it's finally happening. Well done to all concerned. It's quite something to think that scheduled loco-hauled...

  2. John Petley replied to the thread Heritage Railways running over Network Rail.

I think we need to distinguish between occasional use of an NR connection and regular running by heritage railway trains over NR. Apart from the short-lived Totnes workings in the 1980s, to my knowledge, the only lines either to do so or which...

  3. John Petley replied to the thread Bluebell matters.

I've taken two so far. They're not daunting. The people giving the course explained things clearly - mainly general safety issues and the related terminology ("On or near the Line", "Cess", "Six foot", etc.) Obviously, there are also some...

47503 and D1946 according to the owning group's website. In my spotting days (the early/mid 1970s), they tended to be overshadowed by the more glamorous classes like the Deltics and Westerns, but as the variety of diesel loco classes began to...

Good pictures. The sun came out just at the right time for 1054 on the 5.15 train on Saturday. Glad to see it made it to HK and beyond. I was north of Freshfield and it didn't sound too happy as it passed me - plus it was a good 10 minutes late.

  8. John Petley replied to the thread Mid Hants Railway - End of Southern Steam Gala 1-2, 8-9 July 2017.

34038 Lynton was withdrawn in 1966. The seventh of the unrebuilds to last into 1967 was 34057 Biggin Hill - the only BB series loco to do so.

  9. John Petley replied to the thread LE Movements, ECS and Test Runs 2017.

35022 and 35027 will have to wait for Blue Peter, so I believe. As for 35009, a report I read recently said that Mr Riley was "considering" (or some similar word with a hint of indefiniteness) starting on her next year when 47298 is complete....

Have I mis-read the timetable or is it true that on the Saturday there are no solo runs northbound for 35006 until mid-afternoon?????
