The C&W team have already turned out a significant number of restorations, Gary hopes that far more can be achieved with a dedicated and focused group.

Gary is hosting an inaugural meeting at Havenstreet (2pm, Saturday 18th September) to discuss plans and gather ideas - please come along if you are interested in helping him take this plan forward. For more details see the link below:

I visited the Shuttleworth Collection at Old Warden for their ‘Air Pageant 2010’ air display last Sunday and have posted my film of the event on YouTube in HD and taking advantage of the new 15 minute length feature.

In addition to the usual suspects like the Hurricane, Hind, Tutor, Bristol F2B etc the collection flew a number of their other aircraft which I haven’t seen in the air for a few years. The Lympne Trials were highlighted with the ANEC, DH53 Humming Bird and Hawker Cygnet being flown and there was a quartet of de Havillands, the DH51 ‘Miss Kenya’, DH82A Tiger Moth and the two resident Moths, both the DH60G and DH60X models. Also the four Miles aircraft flew too with the resident Falcon, two Magisters and the Southern Martlet being seen. The Parnall Elf, with its characteristic strutting was flown as was the newly restored Storch which gave an extraordinary display of slow flying while the BBMF Lancaster was seen in three flypasts looking just magnificent. The last scene is of the non-airworthy Desoutter monoplane being pushed back towards its hangar.

I hope everyone enjoys the film, just click on the link below.

Does anyone know if the Lakeside & Haverthwaite Railway offer a day in their calendar when the 20, 27 & 110 DMU all operate?

I am aware of the "diesel running weekends" but without sounding greedy would like to see them all on one day - gala style!

I don't think they run diesel galas any more and can't find photographic evidence that all 3 diesels perform during the May Mixed Traffic Weekend. Is this a loco only event?

Thanks in advance to any diesel volunteers/enthusiasts who know the dynamics of this line and can answer my query - I have yet to make a visit...

Also - if anyone knows what restoration or overhaul work has been going on down there as well, I'm sure others as well as myself would be interested, as the line rarely seem to feature in magazines etc...

The Ffestiniog Railway’s brand new Lynton & Barnstaple replica locomotive ‘Lyd’ will be at the Launceston Steam Railway later this month.

Lyd arrives on Wednesday 15th and will complete a trial run either on Wednesday evening (if she arrives early enough) or the following morning. Subject to the trial run being satisfactory, Lyd will haul some of the regular scheduled passenger services, top and tailed with a Quarry Hunslet, on Thursday 16th and Friday 17th.
Trains leave Launceston hourly from 11:00 to 16:00 on these dates.

Lyd will also be in steam on Sunday 19th when she will haul all passenger trains, again top and tailed with a Quarry Hunslet. Trains will provisionally run to the usual hourly timetable, however if there is sufficient demand a new very intensive timetable will be operated on the day.

‘Lyddites’ (those who have contributed towards building Lyd) are entitled to free travel.
For all others standard fares apply:
Adults £8.50, Children £5.50, Senior Citizen £7.00, Family (2A+4C) £25.00.
There is no extra charge to ride behind Lyd, nor is pre-booking required!

Free car parking is available at Launceston station. Those travelling by public transport will be pleased to hear that Launceston town centre can be reached by buses from Bude, Exeter (not Sun.), Liskeard (not Sun.), Okehampton, Newquay and Plymouth - the railway is a short walk down the hill from the town centre.

For those photographers amongst you, Lyd will be on the Newmills (western) end of the train and she should be chimney first. She may even have something on the side at some point that will be worth photographing…

Lyd’s visit to Launceston will be only the second opportunity the general public have had to ride behind her since she was completed last month. So come along and see Britain’s newest steam locomotive, an iconic replica Southern loco on the old Southern network for the first time!

There are also steam specials on the Looe branch line on Sunday 19th (further details here) if you need another excuse to head to Cornwall...

A substantial canal basin awaits visitors arriving by canal in the future.

There still remains to be completed the short Droitwich Junction canal to link Droitwich to the Worcester & Birmingham canal to the east of the town. It is hoped this can be completed in 2011.

Does anyone know if you can just turn up on the day for this event, or whether you need to book in advance?

The photo shoot back in May was 'book in advance' through Steam Charters, but there does not appear to be any information concerning how to book on the website.

This year is the 50th anniversary of the entry into service of the English Electric Type 3 – otherwise known as the Class 37. We’re commemorating this with a Diesel Anniversary Weekend in York in October – but for the last several months, our own 37 (the very first) has been in the works undergoing major body repairs at the hands of skilled welder Dave Hewson.

Currently known as D6700, this engine has also carried 37 119* and 37 350 during its working life, but will be outshopped in its original identity for the event.

We had hoped that the engine would be able to celebrate the class’s anniversary by attending events at other locations around the country, but the extent of the bodywork repairs has meant that it sadly couldn’t happen. It will be good to have the engine finished for our event at the very least.

Here’s some pictures taken yesterday in The Works of the state so far.

(Ed’s note: there’s a tie-in competition for our diesel event – the prize is to start up D6700 during our mass Saturday morning start-up. You can enter via the page for our Class 37 Diesel Anniversary Weekend.)

Note the repaired cab window surounds. You can see Dave Hewson is busy from the reflection of the welding arc on the side of the Western on the adjacent track.

Just one of the sections of repaired bodyside on the loco, with curves and angles galore!

Following behind where Dave Hewson has been working was Steve Huggins, our diesel fitter, grinding the welds back in readiness for priming.
